“You wouldn’t dare.” I narrowed my eyes in his direction.
He smiled, “You gonna bet?”
“Aaron! No!” I booked it out of the dinning room laughing as he ran after me, hands covered in paint.
“Oh come on! You can’t expect me to just let you go after this!” He gestured to the smeared handprint on his back as he spun around.
I glanced back—big mistake—and tripped over Poppy as she ran in front of me. “Oww.” I laughed. Pulling the dog close to me, I eyed Aaron. “Watch it. You don’t want to be on Poppy’s bad side.”
The tiny golden retriever pup yipped happily, licking my hands.
Laughing he leaned over and rubbed her head with the back of his hand before quickly spreading the paint all over my face. “Ha!” He cried victoriously.
“Hey!” My hair was now a pastel blue and my lashes a bright yellow.
He shrugs. “Pay back.”
“Aaron! Emma! I thought we were going to make mommy a mother’s day gift!” Maevie came rushing in, her own hands covered in colorful swirls of paint.
“Alright. Where were we?” I had cleaned off my hands, though the back of my shirt still bore the artwork of Em’s handprint, and returned to the dining room table.
“My handprint! And then it’s going to be a balloon for mom!” Maevie shouted.
“Shhhh” Em whispered. “You want it to be a surprise.”
Maevie instantly quieted and barely even audible, whispered. “A balloon for mommy.”
“I’ll help her with the handprint. Can you get me a rag for my face?” Em asked.
I stared at her. “You don’t trust me with the paint do you?”
She smiles and points to her face, '“After this? No way!”
“How is that even fair? You a started it and it’s not like I trust you with it either!”
She smirks, “Well too bad.”
I shake my head and smile. Emma Bennet what am I going to to with you?
