Geek Girl Review
(SPOILERS) 2.5 stars
Yeah, a review… not a rant. This series doesn’t really deserve it…
First of all, let me start off with saying this: I watched the show first, not realizing it was a book. Ended up LOVING the show and wanted to read the books! I got the books! I read the first two… was kinda bored, ending up reading the third and that’s it. There’s a total of six books in this series I believe… there’s no way I’m reading the last three… sorry.
I had read The Seven and a Half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle right before so the first one wasn’t bad, a small little fluff read, right?
My mistake was continuing… the second was just boring… I LOVED the little flashbacks—though it reminded me of season 2 of the summer I turned pretty XD. Yet the plot of Nick breaking up with her and then finding out he was just giving her space—and by space I mean two months of ZERO! Absolutely NADA contact…—just wasn’t it… not a fan…which kinda makes sense because miscommunication plots are so annoying!! TALK PEOPLE! JUST TALK AND LISTEN!
Ahem… the third…oh boy. The first books were three stars because of Harriet. I loved her! She was great! But the third book… I’m sorry where is she… this is a bratty, stuck up, teen… She turns 16 and suddenly, want’s NO ONE’s help and believes she can do everything herself… THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH HELP SWEETIE! And yes, she thankfully realizes this at the end but it just really upset me through the entire book.
I can’t even imagine how I’d feel if my entire family forgot my birthday. And she did act really mature with the moving, until they got there…, so yes she has some excuses… but RUNNING AWAY?? girlllyyyy noooooo… and being MAD at Nick because he misheard and took the wrong train on accident? Again, especially after something like her parents forgetting her birthday, it’s valid to be upset or sad, but ignoring and getting that MAD at someone for that…
She. Wants. To. Control. Everything… Again… can understand ish, some people just feel really anxious if they aren’t controlling their life. They can’t help it… but she wants to control EVERYTHING. She’d plan at what time they’d step on a certain random brick in the middle of the city… EVERYTHING… I get it not being, let’s go roam around the city and find something to do… but also be a little more open. This isn’t a classroom, it’s love. And you can’t plan that! (Which again yes… she did touch on this at the end…she’s getting better! So this isn’t really directly targeted towards her, just more the plot of the book)
It just didn’t feel realistic…I know I know… it’s a fictional book, it’s not supposed to. But the tone felt coming-of-age/contemporary… which are meant to FEEL realistic. I don’t mean every day life, but I want a realistic flow.
So yeah… maybe the things that I hated were resolved in the end… but I was irritated the enter book by it! I can’t enjoy reading something I hate!
So in summary… if you want a quick fluff read in between. Sure. But there are so much better options in my opinion…
